This was really interesting and insighful as to how the Chinese roasters market operates. Also quite sad that the specialty coffee OG cafés are very few. Hopefully, to your point, with younger generations open to trying new coffee origins and drinks, these specialty coffee shops will outlast us.
Hi Julie — thanks. Yes, looking back over the past decade, café survival rates have been brutally low — perhaps largely due to China’s fierce competition and the market’s rapid iteration. I’m not sure if the survival rate could be improved in this new cycle . But maybe documenting OG cafés would make a meaningful new topic or column:)
